Marlin Moon
March marks the beginning of the offshore season in Charleston and the Lowcountry. Tuna arrive first at hotspots like the Georgetown hole, some 60 miles offshore from the Charleston Jetties. Offshore anglers head out in the moonlit waters, in anticipation of a prize catch of blackfin tuna. In late April, the mahi mahi make their appearance, and is always highlighted by fast paced action on the boat, many times with 6 or 8 rods bending double all at once. Chaos ensues, and these acrobatic fighters give anglers a real workout. The climax of the offshore season is the full moon in June, when the “man in the blue suit” arrives. (The big ones are actually female) When the big blue Marlin strikes, it’s all hands on deck for the fight of a lifetime.
This hand-cut silhouette design is one of my personal favorites. The beautiful outline of the classic Custom Carolina sportfisher, big diesels rumbling under the full Carolina moon as the boat sways in the offshore swell, is one of my favorites, and one of my most cherished memories.
